An Overview: Project Budgets

Project budgets in Runn help you plan, track, and report on how your people and funds are utilized throughout a project's lifecycle. Whether you're working on a simple engagement or a complex, multi-phase initiative, Runn now offers flexible budgeting methods to suit your needs.

Having a project budget will also help you to schedule and track your project and report on your project's progress.

Previously, Runn only allowed you to set budgets by role. We've now added the option to budget by phase, as well as by phase and role, giving you greater flexibility.

Budget by phase and Budget by phase and role is available under Premium, Enterprise and Enterprise Legacy only. (Note: However, you can use Budgets by role if you're on a different plan.)

Understanding Budget Methods

Roles Only

For customer who want to manage their budget by specific roles and are primarily interested in how those amounts are distributed across the entire of the project.

  • Budget is managed by role across the entire project duration.

  • Best for simple projects that don’t require time-based phase breakdowns.

Phases Only (New)

For customer who want to manage their budget across defined time frames (phases) and are not concerned with how those amounts are allocated by role.

  • Budget is managed by project phases without assigning amounts to specific roles.

  • Ideal when time-based tracking is key, but role allocation isn’t important.

Phases and Roles (New)

For customers who want to manage their budget across defined time frames (phases) and control how those amounts are allocated by role.

  • Budget is managed by phase and by role within each phase.

  • Perfect for complex projects that need more details budget control

Please note that both the Phase Only and Phase Role budget methods are available only for Time & Materials or Fixed-Price pricing models. These options are not available for Non-billable projects.

Viewing Budgets

1. In the Planner

Roles Only

  • See the budgets per a role in the project role list.

Phases Only:

  • No per-role budget shown.

  • See total budget and remaining per phase when hover over a phase (Not available yet, but it will be added in the future.)

Phases and Roles:

  • See the budgets per a role in the project role list.

  • Remaining budget updates based on scheduled work and expenses (Not available yet, but it will be added in the future.)

2. In the Project Dashboard

Scroll to the Phases Table to see:

  • Budgeted amount per phase

  • Remaining amount

3. Tracking Budget remaining while planning a project

To track your project budget, follow these steps:

  1. Add a budget to your project.

  2. Schedule work assignments in the Planner.

  3. Go to the Project Dashboard and refresh the page.

  4. You’ll now be able to see and track the budget based on the assignments you've planned.

In the Project overview report you can toggle the budget information of via Columns > Financial > Budget.

To see the the sum of the information group by:

  • Project

    • Phase

      • Project Role

        • Person


Please note the 'Phase Only' and 'Phases & Roles' budget methods are not currently available via the API.
